It sounds like GMC has some very solid advice to offer. For my current series of three books about Angela Fournier (the first, Angela 1: Starting Over has just been published), I first thought of the main characters, a locale, and an overarching story line for three books. I wrote down my ideas and wrote very very broad outlines for the three books and then I wrote a fuller outline for the first one. Then I could not stop writing until it was done.
